How to Hire a DJ in Manchester

A DJ in Manchester runs roughly £225 to £375 for a standard set, about a quarter less than the same booking in London. There are 10 approved DJs listing Manchester on ORDO Events, the commission-free DJ booking platform. You contact them directly, and no commission is taken from either side.

The pricing picture is messier than that single range suggests, though, and the mess is worth understanding before you read a quote.

What does a DJ cost in Manchester?

Poptop contradicts itself on one page, quoting £150 to £395 as the average range and about £674 as the typical per-event cost. Both numbers are probably true of something. They are not true of the same booking, and neither the page nor anyone quoting it says which is which.

Here is the reconciliation nobody publishes: the low figures are short sets, often two or three hours, frequently controller-only. The high figures are full evenings with a PA, lighting and setup time. Once you separate those, Manchester stops looking chaotic. A three-hour set with your venue's sound is a couple of hundred pounds. A five-hour night with the DJ bringing everything is closer to £600.

For a four-hour private party where the DJ brings their own sound, £350 to £550 is the range to budget against.

Why is Manchester cheaper than London?

Lower costs and shorter distances, mostly. A DJ crossing Manchester at 1am is doing a fifteen-minute drive. The same trip across London is an hour and a congestion charge, and that time is priced in whether or not it appears as a line item.

The gap is about 25 percent on comparable work, which matters if you're booking a London DJ to play Manchester. They will quote their London rate plus travel, and you'll pay a premium for someone no better than the ten already here.

Which parts of Manchester change the quote?

Northern Quarter and Ancoats venues are mostly straightforward: load-in is manageable, the rooms are small enough that a modest PA fills them, and DJs know the spaces. Deansgate and Spinningfields corporate venues push the price up, partly because the events are higher stakes and partly because those buildings have loading rules that add an hour at each end.

Anywhere with stairs and no lift is worth mentioning when you make contact. A DJ carrying a subwoofer up two flights will either charge for it or bring less sound than the room needs, and finding that out on the night helps nobody.

What about the December problem?

Booking a Manchester DJ for a Saturday in December is the hardest thing on this page. Corporate party season and wedding season collide, and the good DJs are committed by October.

If your date is in December, contact people now and expect less negotiating room than any other month. If it's flexible, a Thursday in December is often available at a normal rate while the Saturday two days later is not.

How many DJs are actually available?

10 on ORDO, against 42 in London. That's an honest number rather than a flattering one.

Ten is enough to shortlist three and hear real differences between them. It isn't enough to guarantee your date is covered, especially on a Saturday in summer or December. Message more than one, and don't treat a single unavailable reply as the market's answer.

Some of those ten also list Leeds or Liverpool, which is normal in the north west and not a sign they're not really local. It does mean checking they're free rather than assuming.

What should you ask before booking?

Two questions do most of the work.

Does your price include sound that will fill this room? Roughly half the DJs on ORDO bring their own equipment, so the answer genuinely varies. Get it before you compare quotes, because a £300 controller-only quote and a £500 full-PA quote are not the same purchase.

Have you played this venue? A DJ who has knows where the power is, how loud the room goes before it turns to mush, and what time the venue actually pulls the plug. That knowledge is worth more than the £50 you might save elsewhere.

Then listen to a mix properly. Skip past the first ten minutes into the part where they're mixing, not warming up.

Where ORDO is weaker

There's no payment protection. You agree terms with the DJ and pay them directly, so there's no deposit held by anyone else and no dispute process if it goes wrong. There are no reviews either, so you're judging by mixes rather than ratings. ORDO isn't a registered company until December.
