Birthday Party DJ London: What to Look For
Birthday Party DJ London: What to Look For
London has more DJs per square kilometre than almost any city on earth. That sounds like good news until you realise that quantity does not equal quality, and finding the right one for your birthday takes more than a Google search.
Genre first, everything else second
The most important decision is not budget or equipment. It is genre. A DJ who plays the wrong music at the right volume is worse than a Spotify playlist.
Be honest about your crowd:
- Your uni friends want R&B and Afrobeats? Find a DJ who lives in that world.
- You want a sophisticated 30th with deep house and disco? Do not hire an open-format commercial DJ.
- Mixed age group including parents? An open-format DJ who can read the room is essential.
Browse DJs by genre on ORDO and listen to their mixes before you commit.
What a London birthday DJ costs
| Type | Price | |------|-------| | House party, controller only, 2 to 3 hours | £200 – £350 | | Venue party with own speakers, 3 to 4 hours | £400 – £650 | | Premium venue or milestone birthday, 4 to 5 hours | £650 – £1,200 |
These are direct rates. If you go through an agency, add 30 to 50 percent.
Equipment matters more than you think
A common mistake: booking a DJ and assuming they bring speakers. Many London DJs bring a controller and laptop only. If your venue does not have a sound system, you need to either hire one separately (£150 to £400) or specifically book a DJ who brings their own PA.
Ask before booking: "What equipment do you bring and what do I need to provide?"
Five things to check
1. Listen to a mix. Not 30 seconds. At least 15 to 20 minutes. Does it sound like your party should feel?
2. Check their experience. Have they played birthdays before? A club DJ may not know how to handle a room of 40 people in a pub function room.
3. Ask about requests. Some DJs welcome requests. Others refuse them. If your friends will want to request songs, make sure the DJ is comfortable with that.
4. Confirm the timeline. When do they arrive? When do they start? When do they finish? What happens if you want an extra hour?
5. Get it in writing. Date, time, venue, price, equipment, cancellation terms. Even for a casual birthday.
